Thanks Terry,
I checkout the site and I'll probably order it this week. Any idea on the
implications of distributing drawings using these third party fonts?

Well that is a big consideration. I don't know the details of Dave's
licensing, but it probably does have some limitations on distribution. You
should email or call them.

AutoCAD does seem to provide pretty good ways of setting up ALTERNATIVE
fonts. That way you could set up an alternatives list for the recipients.

Good question that I've never considered.

Good Luck, Terry

Hello Adolfo,

There is a couple of things to check right off the top.....

The FONTALT and the FONTMAP settings in Options, most likely one of these is
set differently on one of the workstations.

Below is detailed information regarding both, you can find this information
in the latest release of Support Assistant, located at the following URL.

http://www.autodesk.com/support/autocad/asa2000.htm

Thank you,
Laura McGuinn

====================================================
FONTALT:
Issue

If a drawing contains a font or fonts that are not available when opened on
another computer running AutoCAD, another font will be substituted.

Solution

To specify the alternate font that AutoCAD will use when the font in a
drawing that is not found, you can either set it by using the FONTALT
variable or through the Options dialog.

FONTALT variable:

1. Enter FONTALT on the command line.
2. Enter the name of the substitute font file, or a period for none.
3. Press ENTER.

Options dialog:

1. Select the Tools menu > Options.
2. Select the Files tab.
3. Select Text Editor, Dictionary, and Font File Names.
4. Double-click the Alternate font file option.
5. Either browse to another font, enter the name of the substitute font
file, or enter a period for none.
6. Choose OK.

If an alternate font is not specified, AutoCAD displays the Alternate Font
dialog box. You can then select the font you want substituted when the
drawing is opened.

Note: The default alternate font is simplex.shx.
==============================

FONTMAP:
Issue

AutoCAD defaults to the acad.fmp font mapping file. This file is by default
located in the AutoCAD Support directory.

You can create your own custom FMP file and specify AutoCAD to use it
instead of the default acad.fmp file.

Solution

To create your own font mapping file, you need to create a FMP file by using
a word processor that can save files in ASCII text.

1. Start a new file in a word processor, such as Notepad.
2. Enter a list of font mappings you want in your file. See the acad.fmp
file for an example of the syntax.
3. Save the file so that it has a FMP file extension. Be sure to also save
the file as 'text only'.
4. Start AutoCAD.

Once a new font mapping file has been created, you need to specify the
location of the file so that AutoCAD can find the font file.

The location for the font mapping file can be set in two ways: by setting
the FONTMAP variable or through the Options dialog box.

FONTMAP variable:

1. Enter FONTMAP on the command line.
2. Enter the location of the FMP file, including drive letter.
3. Press ENTER to complete the command.

Options dialog box:

1. Select the Tools menu > Options.
2. Select the Files tab.
3. In the Text Editor, Dictionary, and Font File Names, choose the Font
Mapping File button.
4. Browse to or the path to a FMP (Font Mapping) file.
5. Choose Apply.
6. Choose OK to close the dialog.

Hi Laura McGuinn ,

I'm a professional engineer with a question on Autocad 2000
concerning where the font library is located.
I have lost some fonts that was in the library 3 months ago
and now can not find them. Also how to find the directory to restore the fonts..since the engineering drawing uses them them when they were made and now the subituted font puts the margins off.

Thanks,

MDO
P.S l Let me know anyone to call since Autodesk does not help their customers for 2000 when they get it a bind.

A colleague, Mike McGaha has a TTF font in a folder which we include in the
File support path. His drawing file, however is not using the font, rather
it is substituting the font with SIMPLEX.SHX. I saw a posting on here that
insisted that the font had to be installed from the Control Panel to work.
Below is the results of my understanding of the procedure. Please go all
the way to the bottom and read the last message first to get good idea of
the history of the problem.

"Unable to install the font" message box.
tells me I have eithier too many fonts or file is corrupt.
What's up with this?

Mike

OK, so now we have to figure out why the Unit tags didn't print with it.
Maybe we have to do a font installation from the control panel. Going to
the Control Panel Double click on the FONTS shortcut, up to File and down
to
Install New Font, then pick the Gara.ttf file in your SPECFONT folder and
follow instructions afterward. I've heard that that needs to be done,
although I haven't had to do it myself (ours is not to reason why....).
It
would also be good to double check AutoCAD's File support search path to
see
if the SPECFONT folder name is in there and to make sure it exists as
shown
there (it could be misspelled or calling out the wrong drive, etc.)

This font was already in my 'specfont' folder.

Mike: Please place this in your SPECFONT folder. Please let me know

if
it
asks you to overwrite. Your A2K is still substituting the font with
SIMPLEX.shx

Is there any kind of listing that shows the cross references between ACAD
fonts and the keyboard? ( EX. "q" is the centerline symbol using the GDT
font).

I put a lisp routine (zipped, fontpltr.zip) in the customer files group that
you might want to take a look at.

Is there a way to change ALL of the fonts on a drawing file to another font?
I have a drawing with a lot of text (Mtext) and was wondering if there was
an easy way to change the font.

Thanks in advance!

if you have the old bonus tools or express tools command
CHT
you can then select all the text you want to change and then enter the new
style of font.
