File Size Reduction with Purge Styles?

Should purging the styles from Inventor files reduce the size of the file? I read that it would speed up opening. Is that significantly true?

NO purging required, again if you have not been told this is not AUTOCAD. You are no longer using Acad so stop thinking like you are, it will really help you. Sorry for my attitude but.

Thanks for the input. I never used AutoCad much at all. I got the purge idea from this newsletter:

http://newsletters.hagerman.com/newsletters/ebul64-Mech.htm

in particular this statement:
"The Purge option looks at the same file or files that you selected and removes all unused styles from your files. This is most beneficial on large assemblies as removing the unused styles can reduce the memory footprint of that large assembly."

I may have taken this out of context though because I don't understand everything he describes in the letter. Any explanations would be greatly appreciated.

it may or may not reduce file size significantly unused styles are
stored (cached)inside of the file.

Style library was introduced in an earlier edition ( somewhere around
+/- version 8. Before that time, all the styles were native to the
templates. As a result they got very large and unwieldy. Once the
external styles libraries were introduced, they were removed from the
templates, and only templates that were actually used in your design
were cached in each individual file. Unless you got into the habit of
creating many styles within an individual file, purging will have much
less effect.

To test this out, simply turn off the styles Library (use styles Library
= no). Then, open a new file from any one of your templates. You'll find
that your styles are very limited. Materials and colors will be almost
nonexistent.
