Low Tech solution to AutoCAD 2009's Memory Leak...

First open your Task Manager... switch to Processes and sort by Mem Usage.

Then open a large drawing in AutoCAD 2009 (any flavor).. choosing one with several viewports make it even more interesting.

Once opened.. Minimize the complete AutoCAD session window (not just the drawing).

ACAD Memory Usage drops almost 90% once the window is minimized.

Now Reopen the minimized AutoCAD window and the memory returns to a workable level.

The ACAD memory still does a serious memory ramp up during any saving function which is still a problem for us.

This technique seems useful in reclaiming or resetting AutoCAD's memory usage without restarting.

my configuration is:

Windows XP Pro SP3

Intel Xeon CPU

X5450 @ 3.00GHz

2.99 GHz, 3.00 GB of RAM

AutoCAD Mechanical 2009 SP2

(being used in generic AutoCAD 2009)

I swear if this works you deserve a huge raise. We have been battling this issue for months. Have tried everything, GB switch, cleaning temp files, boosting VM, etc....

I went test it on a problem machine we have been having...

600,000+K of memory AutoCAD was using... .

Minimized then maximized...

Memory went down to 28,000K

all I can say is - WOW!!!
Thank you for posting this suggestion!

What has been described happens for all applications. When the window is minimized the memory usage listed in task manager drops but as soon as you start using the application the memory usage rockets straight back up. If you watch the performance tab of the task manager you see nothing happens there.

My question is have any of you actually noticed any gain in performance or disappearance of problems.

It's definitely temporary, but in Revit it appeases the Workshare monitor
virtual memory nag for awhile

Hey there,

nope it didn't work. Well you can see the memory jump down when it's minimized but our user had a the low memory note pop up. Tried minimizing CAD, watched the memory go down in the task manager but CAD still crashed anyway.

I have not seen a whole lot of performance gains in this release to be honest with you.

The user did seem to think that it helped out because she was down to her cad crashing about every hour to hour and 20 mins. So far she lasted a couple of hours.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

The effect of minimizing windows is temporary relief for the bigger memory problem in AutoCAD 2009. The "out of memory error" is a different but related condition which has a temporary fix by using a 3GB startup switch configuration. All in all we have found that if utilize this minimizing windows in your workflow, it can keep your system more responsive for longer periods of time before restarting is required. It also appears to have a higher percentage of not crashing while saving if minimizing is preformed just prior to saving.

One observation that appears to be a consistent AutoCAD 2009 memory buster is the extensive use of viewports or xclips. This technique of drawing by using viewports to reference several xrefs.. sends the memory usage thru the roof. By reducing viewports, memory usage can be brought down into acceptable ranges.

I am sure you are right, but it's still no excuse especially when 2007 doesn't have an issue what so ever. I have been able to suck out memory in CAD just by opening, purging, and closing drawings. (ran a script of a lot of dwg files) and we are talking a typical drawing size of less than 200kb.
