Update dim scale in layout, model view

How do I create dimension styles which are "part of" the templates I use? When I'm working in a given template and drawing in model space, I want to be able to go to layout and update the dimensions so that, regardless of the zooms scales in various viewports on that layout, I want all the dimension scales to be the same so they're readable when I go to paper space & print.

dimension in paperspace outside the viewport if you want such a miracle feature. Otherwise, you create as many dimstyles as you would have scales and remember to reset to each one as each need arises. -- Dean Saadallah Add-on products for LT http://www.pendean.com/lt--

don't worry what people say, do what you want, there is no 'right way' to do anything in AutoCAD. -- Dean Saadallah Add-on products for LT http://www.pendean.com/lt--

The only thing you need to vary in paper space is the dimlfac units and dimension in paperspace. My technique is model space units are 1:1, and the dimscale unit is set to 1/viewport scale. So you can scroll zoom so the model space fits as you like, set the view port scale to the nearest integer if possible (that way you can just type 1/3 or 1/15 etc. instead of calculating the decimal equivelent and do your dimensioning there. Grip editing makes dimension updates a snap after doing a soldraw to update your model edits.
To speed things up I used have the 10x, 20x, 30x, 2x etc. templates predefined, but it is only a few steps so I have drifted away from multiple templates as I also have multiple title blocks for different companies. The only time I dimension in model space is for 3d assembly drawings where you need the dimension in iso or perspective, and then then you only need the dimstyle's dimlfac to 1 and change the dimscale in that case.
Lots of ways to slice this one. You should also be able to determine a formula to set your dimscale based on your viewport scale just about as easy, but, one problem dimensioning in model space and varing the size of the dimscale is that you could end up with a bunched up mess as you won't get real time wysiwig as you are dimensioning...that could be a problem.
Maybe there is something here you can work with.

Hi My problem with dimensioning in paper space is that my monitor is small enough that I often need to zoom in order to see what I'm doing. I'd rather not mess with the zoom settings that fit the template the way I want just to put in a dimension. DF

I work in model space, including placing dimensions. When I'm done, I go to layout view & fit the drawing to my template border. At that point the dimensions are so small they can't be read but on my old machine, ACAD 2002 allowed me to choose "update" from the dimension menu at which point I could "sweep" over the dimensions & they'd all update to the desired scale and become readable, with proper dimension line offsets etc. I don't create dimensions on layout view or paper space because the scale is so small (especially on my monitor) I can't see where I'm snapping to. Yea, I could zoom in layout view but I'd rather leave the zoom alone since I've already fit it to the border. If I have to add a dimension later (often the case) my former method was to simply add it in model space, go to layout view and update that dimension to match the scale of the others, then go to paper space and re-print. When I got a new machine and re-installed ACAD 2002 all I could get when clicking update is the Dimension Style Manager box (just the same as when I pick "Style..." I saved my settings from the old machine, including the template files & dimension scale settings & pointed the new Support file search paths to them but, apparently this update "feature" wasn't one of them.

your missing the point, you can zoom in paperspace without changing the zoom factor of view port. you can still updat dims to new scale, it will adjust spacing but not of the first line, just the space between like in a baseline dim, however, not having used used power dimensioning. that may not be the case. pspace dimesioning has changed since 2002

You know, that's the biggest work around for a non-problem I think I've ever seen.
I'm assuming that you're using a dimscale of 0 and a text style with a height of 0, good.
LOCK the viewport, select the viewport and checked the "Display Locked" setting to YES. That will free you up to zoom around the drawing to your heart's content.
Now if you want to retrieve a certain view in paperspace, save that view with the VIEW command, then recall it anytime you wish.
With the dim settings I've assumed above, you can dim through the viewport and the text size will adjust for the viewport scale, no need for changing tabs or updating dims.
