Hi, over the last while you might have know that I have been unable to work on ObjectDCL due to a severe medical condition. For this I must apologize. I have decided that since I cannot put the energy in that it deserves, I am going to post ObjectDCL as an open source project on www.sourceforge.net. Anyone will be able to download the compiled software and anyone will be able to sign in and contribute to its further development. Essentially ObjectDCL will become a community development project.

Thanks everyone, Chad Wanless

I hope everything is getting better for you Chad, and will continue to. I
know a lot of people will be happy to help develop the ObjectDCL program.

Best wishes to you and your family.

But now I feel relieved. The world would be a much better place if everybody

Hi Chad.

We're very saddened to hear your medical condition is such that you've not
been able to work on ObjectDCL. Your work on ObjectDCL represents a
significant and inspiring contribution to the CAD community, punctuated by
the generous decision to donate it to open source. We recognize and
sympathise how difficult the decision must have been and indeed the
poignancy of it (your loss, the community's gain). You have our genuine
gratitude and respect; know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and
your family.

Why don't we try to invent something to help Chad (if he needs help) and his
family ?
Why don't try,
who will be able to update the ObjectDCL C++ code,
to insert in the software, an option, a command,
that goes to a web page
where everyone can send a contribution to the author ?

And if here is someone that has a better idea,
this is the moment to expose it.

Chad is giving us something,
and it is right that we have to give something to him.

I hope strongly that these intents will have success.

Yep, that would be an excellent idea.
I still cant believe how inexpensive he made ODCL to us before. It is the kind of thing that should end the normal day
job he had. Wish I had a product that unique.

decided that since I cannot put the energy in that it deserves, I am going to
post ObjectDCL as an open source project on www.sourceforge.net. Anyone will be
able to download the compiled software and anyone will be able to sign in and
contribute to its further development. Essentially ObjectDCL will become a
community development project.

Thanks everyone, Chad Wanless

I have been watching the www.sourceforge.net site but have not found anything as yet on ObjectDCL. Does anyone know when this will be available. Has a group been setup to support this or is it more of and ad hoc type of support system?

Thanks Chad for you generosity,

Ron

Chad, I haven't been able to find any ObjectDCL sites on SourceForge.net as yet. Can you post a link or give us an update on both the status of ObjectDCL and your self?

Thanks,

Greetings to all,

As you already know by now,
ObjectDCL has been sold.

It is a fact.

Martin Leduc P.E. and I, Andrea Andreetti,
Are founders of DuctiSOFT inc. and are now owners of all legitimate and legal rights
of this product created by M. Chad Wanless, according to the legal agreement
signed between the two parties.

This transaction is to ensure the survival and proper operation of ObjectDCL.

www.DuctiSOFT.com will be available shortly and will
allow you to download the new official version of ObjectDCL

Thanks again M. Chad Wanless.
Hoping you will enjoy the upcoming version.

Sincerly,

Andrea Andreetti

How is this possible as ObjectDCL had already been released under the
GPL (according to the sourceforge page)? I suspect that there will be
little good will towards a company that intends to re-close the source
and charge for the code.

Well, I'm not a layer, but seems to me that they can do with their code
what they want, but the version already released under GPL remains that
way as they can't rescind that. So, the question is whether there is
interest in maintaining the GPL version separately from the commercial
version.

Hi CADz. after a bit of reading, let me tell you
that you have been taken for a ride.

Chad Wanless has sold the rights to something
that he has released under GPL licensing. By
doing so, Chad has breached the terms of that
license, which means that anyone that may have
made investements in furthering development of
the open source project, probably has sufficient
grounds to bring a legal claim against him.

Its a fact.

Tony,
Chad can do whatever he likes with is code. He can release it under the GPL and sell it to any companies he wants. "His" code however is whatever he had prior to releasing it under the GPL. DuctiSOFT can sell the pre-GPL code in any way they like, but cannot use contributed code unless it is GPL'd as well. If DuctiSOFT closes the source and uses GPL code, that's where it becomes illegal. Martti is correct about the important question being whether or not to continue development on the GPL version if the DuctiSOFT version is closed source. I am not a lawyer, and if I'm wrong about any of this I'd be happy to find out.

Tavis:

Your explanation is exactly correct. DuctiSOFT apparently purchased
rights to the original ObjectDCL source code from Chad Wanless, which would
mean their rights to that source code are unencumbered by the GPL license
that the OpenDCL project is operating under. I have no information about
this, but they may also have purchased rights to use the "ObjectDCL"
trademark, which is not covered by the GPL. In any case, the open source
OpenDCL project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/opendcl) is alive and well
and it will continue to evolve as long as the user community actively
supports it. :)

Sorry, and apologies to Chad.

When I wrote that, I was under the assumption that
the open source project was pulled, and no longer
available to the public.

IOW, I didn't know about "OpenDCL" when I wrote
that, which of course, changes everything.

And, just to clarify, selling ObjectDCL to anyone is
not a breach of the GPL. Removing the project and
the source from public availability, would have been.

One other point of note, is that while the original
source may have been sold to (who?), they are still
free to incorporate subsequent work from the open
source project into their derivative, which I find
a bit troubling.

Just to clarify, they (and anyone else) are free to incorporate the open
source code into a derivative product only if they also publish the
derivative product's source code under the GPL.

BTW, if you check the OpenDCL credits you'll notice that the original
ObjectDCL code incorporated copyrighted source code from a number of open
sources. At least a few of these sources allow their code to be used only
for non-commercial or open source software. The original ObjectDCL code did
not even credit these sources, so it's doubtful that the code was used with
permission. If this is true, even software based on the original ObjectDCL
source code may not be sold as a commercial application so long as the
offending code is used without a license. :)

Hi Owen. Thanks for the clarification.

I've had little-to-no exposure to ObjectDCL,
so don't know much about its origins.
