I have a knife, and I want to make an ellipsoid that I can cut into the knife edge to make it a serrated edge. Just like this tutorial: http://www.tutorialhero.com/click-53791-model_a_serrated_knife_in_rhino_3d.php

Revolve and then "Rectanglular Pattern" for curve driven pattern.
Can you attach what you have so far?

Can I use the rectangular pattern to make a sphere-like divot in the edge of the blade?

I can't post what I have so far, I don't want to risk the design. This is for a company.

I've attached a basic knife with one sharp edge. I want to create ellipsoidal divots along the edge of the sharp blade, just like you see in the tutorial I posted in the first post.

Thanks in advance

opening the ipt in my 2009 shows no design. Theres nothing visible on the screen. I assume by EOP, you mean End of Part?

If you know how to do the geometry Dennis posted what is the difference? Simply do the ellipse sketch above the part some distance.

ok everything we've done in this thread so far has been all in 2D sketches. I need to make a 3D slide along a blade edge. It needs to end up looking like these:

Yes, I have provided many examples, but neither of you have been able to do it.

You two provided me with a knife blade with 2D cuts into the blade.

The examples I've provided have a sliced into the blade, leaving a spherical divot in the blade. That's what I need to figure out what to do.

So, if I were to ask anything, I would ask to PLEASE replicate EXACTLY the knife in my original example, please.

I'm sorry if you're getting frustrated, i wish we could chat on the phone about it, I think it would have come across more clearly.

These are not 2D cuts. Zoom in and look closely. The Ellpsoid

No, I'm not a student, but I'm not an Inventor Expert either. I'm just one of many engineers (electrical actually) who are Inventor self-taught, and we're designing a special tactical knife.

When I'm faced with a (redesign) geometry problem one of the best methods is to walk out to the shop floor and see how they actually make the part. My guess is a revolving grind stone. Hence a Revolve feature.

I don't think you actually want an ellipsoid, per se. Unfortunately I'm using 2010, but I've attached an image that shows how I made the feature. Basically you want to use a sweep and the key to making it look right is to use the parallel orientation setting. I've attached a picture of the full knife here:

http://discussion.autodesk.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=727726

I've been wanting to model a knife for some time now, you post gave me a good excuse :-)
