IDV Files - PLEASE RESPOND

Hello Inventor Community,

The Inventor Development Team is trying to get an understanding of how
wide-spread the use of IDV files are in your assemblies.

For those that don't know what IDV files are, they are externally-stored
view representations, and were part of the original Inventor assembly
architecture (for those that remember the Rubicon and R1 days). In Inventor
R8, we internalized the storage of design views but we still maintained
support for creating and using external design views via the IDV file.

Please respond here and let us know whether or not you use them. You can
also contact me directly at andrewDOTfaixATautodeskDOTcom.

Thanks everyone,

We have a few that still hang around, but we don't intentionally use
them any longer.

Haven't used them since they were internalized. Not a big user
of design views in either case. I prefer LOD's instead.

'Don't use them.

I thought the idea for keeping them around (asides from obvious migration
reasons) was that an assy could be opened from vault and while it is NOT
checked out, they would allow viewing of the assy without dirtying the file.

Perhaps the built-in ones do this?

Have not used them since they went away.
Did not know they could even still be used.
Don't they roll into the assembly if it is migrated so then they can be blown away?

They migrated in but you can still use them if you
hit the "private" switch in the Rep dialog.

Never use them now, some lying around in folders from when we started on R8, the sort of thing to get lost or disconnected.
If you are asking if they should be dumped, I would say yes.

I use internal DV Reps, but I've never used external IDVs. Although I did
use them prior to Inv8

I've never figured out how they might be used.

Surely the contents of an IDV will be specific to the contents of an IAM, so
how can they be used in a different assembly/weldment?

I'd be interested to see a demonstration before I make any comment about
getting rid of public/private DV Reps.

How do IDVs behave with iAssemblies?
