I want to edit the OUTLINE LINES of a 3d model

the model is a 3ds model (made in 3dsmax)
I want to convert the model to a drawing in different views & to edit the lines.
I tried to convert to DWG but it shows too many lines (all the mesh's lines) - but i need it like opaque.
I tries to shade a 3ds model but i can't delete some lines because it opens the model..
How can I make a drawing of the OUTLINE LINES? to be able to edit them (delete some, color...)
I can use autocad, 3dsmax, or any other program that can help me do it, even illustrator
see the attached printscreens
tnx

The FLATSHOT command in AutoCAD works very well to convert 3D outlines
to 2D linework. There is a setting to control whether the hidden lines
are removed entirely (as you requested), or given a different color
and/or linetype than the outlines.

But the procedure needs work: after you get the view of the model as you
want it, set UCS > View to force the block of 2D lines to match the
current view. Then run FLATSHOT. The 2D block will be inserted in the
current UCS -- usually not where you want it. So get back to UCS World,
and re-insert the most recently created block (named something helpful
like A$C521D28B8), and all should be well.

This is with 2008; I don't know if things are improved any in 2009.

Not necessary. Get your drawing to the view you want (top, front...), then
set the ucs to world. Run flatshot and place the block it creates. Do
again for each other view you want. When you're through, set your view back
to top, or what ever corresponds to World, and move your views wherever you
need them.

Thanx to u both.
but I have, unfortunatly, autoCad 2000, & I didn't find this option there. (i don't use autoCad often)
maybe this version didn't have this tool. can be? do i have to upgrade?

FLATSHOT came in with 2007.

So your best bet to get 2D vector linework is to plot to a DXB file with
hidden lines removed, then use DXBIN to insert the 2D linework back into
the drawing. In ver. 2000, use DXBOUT or set up a plotter definition
that writes to a DXB file.

If your 3D original is indeed the size of a house, set the plot scale to
an appropriate known value so you can scale the linework back up easily
if accurate scaling is important -- using "Scale to Fit" will cause
problems later. DXB loses all layer information, and (in 2008 anyway)
linetype info for 3dsolids.

Take a look at the SOLVIEW and SOLDRAW commands.
They will line work from the edges and allow you to edit the colors and
linetypes. SOLPROF may be another option.

It is SOLPROF in AutoCAD back to at least
r13.  Set a view port with the view you want, SOLPROF it, it makes2 blocks
- one of the hidden linework and one of the exposed.  CHSPACE them to PS
and explode them to manage stuff (if you want).

It olnly works on acis solids (ACAD solid models),
though, the model from 3dsmax may be coming into CAD as solid meshes which
probably would not work (not sure)

DXB files are generated using the PLOT command and
referencing the DXB File plotter.

To create this plotter device:

Run PlotterManager, click on Add-A-Plotter Wizard,
click Next, Select My Computer, click Next, Under Manufacturer, select AutoCAD
DXB file, click Next till click Finish.

i tried to use the FLATSHOT command. but i've got "there are no solids or surfaces that can be projected"
why? what's wrong?
tnx

Although the documentation says that FLATSHOT converts all 3D objects,
it should really say "3Dsolids" since it does not work on polygon or
polyface meshes (which is how 3DS models get imported into AutoCAD), or
3dfaces.

Since it sounds as though you are wanting to merely edit the outline of the
model as 2D geometry, and the model is so simple, why not just draw the outline
yourself?  Seems like converting that model from 3DS into anything is
overkill. just MHO...

Does 3ds have the capability to export a .sat
file?

Probably not as I think that it is a surface/facet modeller - not a
solid modeller.
