Beam Joins

I made a new beam family to represent a single joist with instance handles for scope arrows to represent a range. I used an existing framing family, joists, for a template to make this family. Everything works well exept the beam joins don't work. Why would a family lose this ability. How do I get them beack?
Any ideas?
