I brought home some Inventor v2008 drawings/models to do some work on them. Since my company is still using 2008,
I downloaded a 30 trial 2008 CD until Autodesk furnished me with a home license.

Anyway, I can open and edit the drawings but all symbols, such diameter are showing a letter ("n" in this case) instead of the diameter symbol. It occurs for all symbols.

Is there a way to get the symbols back to normal?

You are missing your AIGDT font file located under C:\Windows\Fonts. Extract and paste the attached version into the correct location.
