Great idea though! Sounded like it should work, so I'm bummed to hear it
didn't.
Another way to look at it that you can always just set random points on the
surface if its something that doesn't repeat on a pattern. Also can use the
feature line tools to get a "polyline" draped to a surface, and then create
points from its vertices for things that aren't parallel to the alignment.

I was thinking about this topic on the drive into work this morning and was
wondering about possibility of creatively using a pipe network structure to
accomplish this in areas where there was a surface available. The structure,
something like a circular manhole, could be dressed up with a light pole
'style' using the 3d light pole block. The structure would derive it's
insert elevation from the surface and the 3d light block would insert at
it's base and thus be on the surface. The structure, light, could also be
updated if and when the surface changed.
.... I wonder if the height of the light could be controlled by the
structure depth ....ooo, ooo, edit the 'style' to set the height.
never mind ... it didn't work like I hoped it would. I see no way to over
ride the model, 3D, view of a structure with a 3D block.
