Dimensioning and blocks and mlines.

So I'm building a huge block library and since I have to stack things on top of each other, rather than trimming stuff manually I use wipeouts (I know some don't care for wipeouts but they work so far for me). Anyway, all things work as planned until I try and dim them. For some reason the dims aquire the PS distance rather than the MS distance. Am I missing something?

I have DIMASSIC set to 2 and dim in PS. It has worked for me for a while until I started getting drawings kicked back cause the dims were wrong in a few places.

Here is what I have gleaned so far.

If I make an mline between 2 pipe fittings fo a pipe and then dim it it will pick up paperspace distance. If I explode the mline it will pick up the modelspace distance properly.

So far with the blocks, I have not been able to figger it out. Dim between 2 blocks (pipe fittings) with wipeouts (frames on) and the dim is PS distance. If I turn off frames on the wipeouts it seems to get the proper distance.

Am I missing something?

TIA

DJ

Hey gents, still having an issue with dimensioning to block thru an mview. This is becoming a real issue for me here. Any direction would be appreciated.

TIA

If your in viewport and want to have your dimension coming from model space, just click precisely to the object from the viewport so you will get the dimension from the model space, it works for me all the time. make sure threre is no overlapping object on the paper space.. hope this would help.

When I dim in PS, I have to make sure the "Scale dimensions to layout" selection is checked (see attached pic)

Then I have to make sure I have Dimassoc to 2 (which you said you have).

Should work. If not, try dimming in modelspace then using CHSPACE to get them into PS. A workaround, and it disassociates ... but it's an alternative.

Actually, I have developed a solution and fergot to post it.

Seems as though when you make a wipeout (raster image) the raster image frame takes the forefront and is used by ACAD to calculate the dim even if you have pushed it to the back (display order) in the block so that when you dim from the object it doesn't seem to recognize the raster image as a true object and it will not multiply the dim to the mview scalefactor.

In other words, if you put a wipeout on a wipeout layer and push it to the back in the block editor and save the block, insert it and try and dim it. it will grab the wipeout everytime without fail. Even if the wipeout frame is off.

HOWEVER .... if you turn off the wipeout layer it will grab the point you are really aiming at and give you a valid dimension. Go Figger. Apparently AutoDESK programmers didn't (didn't figger).
