Does AutoCAD support Open Type fonts? Our logotype is an Open Type font & we want to use it on our drawings. It isn't clear from the posts.

Why not try it and see what happens: or is there substance behind the query?

Dear Dean--Thanks for your reply. We only have AutoCAD 2005 in the office (migrating to Revit, so no upgrade). I do not want to call in a favor to have a consultant who has a later AutoCAD version try to do the work for me unless I am certain that it will work.--Margaret

Later versions of AutoCAD have no problem with the font type, earlier ones
do: what is you finding in 2005?

Later as in R2006 (and I thought R2005) and higher.

The answer: AutoCAD 2009 does NOT see Open Type Fonts. Since AutoCAD is being abandoned, I gues there isn't hope for getting this fixed. Too bad.

We are in the process of refreshing out company brand and are now using OTFs. I find that AutoCAD MEP 2010 and Revit MEP 2009 both do not recognize our new company fonts...I have not tried it in Revit MEP 2010 yet, does anybody know if they are supported in that version??

Dean, What is the reasoning behind not supporting this font type in Autodesk products?

It depends if you both are talking about POSTSCRIPT outlined Opentype fonts
which are not supported (AutoCAD dropped Postscript fonts a long time ago,
old-news);

or

if we are talking about TRUETYPE outlined Opentype fonts (AutoCAD has done
truetype fonts for a very long time). See screenshot and old link:

Thanks Dean,
The fonts must be postscript based...I'm jumping through the hoops right now with fontforge to convert them to TTF.

You should be able to open the font file in Windows and read the definition
at the top.

I checked right after you posted the screenshot. Confirmed that they are postscript outlined OTFs. Hopefully the conversion goes well!

I thought AutoCAD stopped supporting postcript fonts because most other applications were doing the same. From what I remember, postscript fonts suffer from similar problems as truetype fonts: never prints the same on two different printers or computers, and how it appears on screen is not representative of how it prints. I have seen several open type fonts in both .shx and .ttf formats, but please remember, using a non-standard font will mean everyone who opens the drawing, especially outside of your office will need to have a copy of the font, which may not be freely distributable (subject to copyright).
